Dan Webb posted his list of useful javascript pieces. I have to admit that $(), event handler and getting elements by class name makes your life easier. I would add JQuery to this list, especially when you have some bigger project in mind.

With script.aculo.us we’re able to build web components which look and behave like flash. It’s all about effects. Take a look on this post. There is also growing number of effects submitted by others here. The good example of application which uses all juicy effects is here.
